Lianhe Zaobao revamps its homepage
Lianhe Zaobao has recently revamped its World Wide Web
edition of the newspaper, in a bid to further promote its
influence among overseas readers .
Lianhe Zaobao Online, a popular Chinese-langugage electronic
publication, currently boasts monthly hits totalling 3.5
million, of which more than 85% are from overseas. The new
homepage features news headlines, main stories and photos
from the day's Lianhe Zaobao newspaper.
Lianhe Zaobao Online has also started a series of new sections,
including "Hong Kong'97 Special", "News Analyses and
Commentaries on Pai Hsiao-Yen Murder Case" , ''Zaobao's Computer
World" and "Zaobao's Photo Collection". To make the online
newspaper more interactive, the new edition has set up an
"Information Centre" that answers questions from readers and
also serves as a forum for discussions among readers.
Lim Jim Koon, editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said that since it was
launched in August 1995, Lianhe Zaobao Online has been
extremely popular with overseas readers, for its neutral
coverage of current affairs about China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Currently, the most accessed sections of Lianhe Zaobao Online
have been China/Hong Kong/Taiwan, International, Forum, Opinion
and Lianhe Zaobao Commentaries.
However, Mr. Lim also noted that the previous edition of
Lianhe Zaobao Online had been lagging behind in design and
variety of content. The newspaper has recently appointed
its first Online Editor to revamp Lianhe Zaobao Online and
implement future development plans.
He said Lianhe Zaobao Online, while maintaining its popularity
among overseas readers keen on China/Hong Kong/Taiwan affairs,
will also try to woo young readers in Singapore. For example,
''Zaobao's Computer World" and "Zaobao's Photo Collection" have
been intended for local young people.
Lianhe Zaobao Online plans to consolidate its revamped edition
based on readers' feedback in the next few months, while
experimenting with coverage of breaking news and provding audio
and video clips for readers.
