Her daughter has run an agar-agar jelly business for more than a decade, but this 95-year-old grandmother has become the face of the shop — and even its top salesperson. “The customers like me, and I like them too,” she said.
Lively and endearing, Zheng Guanying, 95, has a son and a daughter. Her daughter runs Food Mapping, an agar-agar jelly shop on the second floor of Coronation Shopping Plaza on Bukit Timah Road. Despite her advanced age, Zheng insists on helping out at the shop every day.
When a Shin Min Daily News reporter visited, Zheng greeted everyone with a broad smile. Her infectious warmth brought smiles to customers' faces too.
The grandmother said she was fond of every customer who came to the shop. “I really like my customers, and they really like me too. This is how I spend each day: getting out and about, staying active and enjoying each day as it comes.”
She was seen offering customers a variety of samples, enthusiastically introducing and recommending products, and chatting with them about everyday life.
She told the reporter that her daughter had operated at a food court in Beauty World for about 15 years before recently moving to the shopping centre. Besides traditional agar-agar jelly and customised jelly cakes, the shop also sells French egg tarts, assorted biscuits and other treats.
She said: “My children and grandchildren will find their own way. It is up to them to take the business further. As long as you put your heart into it, you can do things well.”
