A 33-year-old man who allegedly attacked another man with a sharp weapon fled by car, ran a red light during a police pursuit and collided with another car, causing his vehicle to overturn. He will be charged on Saturday (7 November) with voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and failing to provide a breath specimen.

The Singapore Police Force said in a statement on Saturday that it was alerted to an assault in the River Valley Road area at about 8.35pm on Friday (6 November).

Preliminary investigations showed that a 33-year-old man allegedly attacked a 34-year-old man with a sharp weapon. The injured man was conscious when taken to hospital. The alleged attacker drove away after the incident.

Nearly four hours after the incident, at 12.05am the following day, officers patrolling Tessensohn Road spotted the vehicle and directed the driver to stop, the statement said. Instead of complying, the man sped off, prompting the officers to give chase.

A video shared on TikTok by an eyewitness showed several police cars in pursuit, with sirens blaring. While fleeing, the man ran a red light and drove straight through the junction of Race Course Road and Birch Road, colliding with a white car crossing the junction on a green light.

The impact caused his vehicle to overturn and come to rest upside down on the central road divider.

Police said the 36-year-old male driver of the other car and his two female passengers, aged 26 and 42, were conscious when taken to hospital. The 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was also conscious when taken to hospital.

Under Section 324 of the Penal Code, anyone convicted of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon faces up to seven years in jail, a fine, caning, or any combination of these punishments.

Under the Road Traffic Act, anyone convicted of failing to provide a breath specimen faces a fine of up to $5,000 or up to six months in jail.

Police stressed that they have zero tolerance for such acts of violence and will take action against those who blatantly disregard the law. They also reminded all motorists to comply with police officers’ instructions and observe traffic rules to ensure the safety of all road users.
