How do stories travel across languages and cultures? Translators Shanna Tan and Daryl Lim Wei Jie explore how translation connects readers to new worlds,preserves meaning and voice, and navigates gulfs of meaning. This panel highlights the joys and travails of translation, showing how it enriches experiences, bridges cultures, and transforms stories into something both familiar and refreshingly new.
About the Speakers:
Shanna Tan is a Singaporean literary translator working from Korean, Chinese and Japanese into English. Her translations include the bestselling Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum.
Daryl Lim Wei Jie is an award-winning poet, editor, translator and critic from Singapore. He is a deputy director on arts and heritage with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). His collections of poetry include Mistranslations from a Future Vernacular (2025) and Anything but Human (2021), the latter shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize. He conceptualised and co-edited the celebrated anthologies Food Republic: A Singapore Literary Banquet (2020), and The Second Link: An Anthology of Malaysian and Singaporean Writing (2023). In 2023, he received the Young Artist Award, Singapore’s highest honour for artists under 35.
