Since the start of 2026, the global order has been undergoing its most severe test since World War II. In a new era of chaos characterised by the restructuring of relations between the United States and its allies, uncertainty in US-China relations, trade wars and conflict, rampant unilateralism, and the collapse of multilateral rules, ASEAN faces the ultimate test --- survive or be marginalised.
The fourth edition of the Southeast Asia Lecture invites Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Finance Mr Liew Chin Tong to share his insights in person. Minister Liew has served as the Deputy Minister of Defense, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, and Deputy Minister of Finance and is one of the few policymakers in Southeast Asia who possesses a cross-disciplinary perspective, spanning both national security and economic governance.
He will analyse how ASEAN, caught between US-China decoupling, the shakeup of existing ally systems, and global technological bifurcation, can resist becoming a pawn in the great power game. Instead, he will explore how ASEAN can leverage its collective agency to reshape regional economic sovereignty amid turbulence.
